A 16×16 board is not just a bigger 8×8 board. With 256 squares and 32 pieces a side, the opening lasts longer, the center is harder to dominate, and a single piece covers a smaller share of the board.
Long-range pieces gain value: a Queen or Rook with open lines can reach across distances no orthodox game allows. Knights and other short-range jumpers need help to matter, which is exactly where the new super pieces — and the programmable piece — come in.
King safety also changes. There is far more room to run, so a naked King is not the instant loss it is on a small board. Patient, coordinated attacks beat lone raids.
